JEFFCOOL® P200 Coolant
JEFFCOOL® P200 Coolant is an inhibited U.S.P grade propylene glycol that is used as an industrial coolant and heat transfer agent. It is intended for use where contact with food or potable water is possible and toxicological properties must be considered. All components in JEFFCOOL® P200 are listed on the U.S. FDA GRAS list for chemicals to be used as direct/indirect food additives. JEFFCOOL® P200 is available with Kosher certification.
The major applications for inhibited glycol heat transfer fluids in the food industry fall into two broad categories: chilling/freezing of food and beverage products and defrosting/dehumidifying equipment and facilities.
JEFFCOOL® P200 Coolant as a Heat Transfer Medium
One of the most successful applications of JEFFCOOL® P200 coolant is as a heat transfer medium for fermentation cooling in breweries and wineries. The product may be utilized to cool fermentation tanks, yeast storage tanks, and beer storage tanks. The non-corrosiveness and low toxicity of JEFFCOOL® P200 coolant offer many advantages over refrigerants, such as brine, ammonia, water, or uninhibited propylene glycol. Small amounts of JEFFCOOL® P200 coolant affect neither the yeast nor fermentation of the beer.
JEFFCOOL® P200 is used extensively by distilleries, breweries, wineries, dairies, and fruit juice processors to cool liquid foods during processing. JEFFCOOL® P200 can also be used in spray and immersion freezing of packaged foods to provide a means of economically quick-freezing the outer layer of packaged foods before the final freezing process.
In walk-in freezer and chiller units, freezing tunnels, and basket freezer units, moisture from the air can condense on cooling coils and form a layer of frost, which reduces the heat transfer efficiency of the system.
To prevent frost formation, a cold aqueous solution of JEFFCOOL® P200 is used for defrosting cooling coils where the exhaust air from the coils varies over a wide temperature range. JEFFCOOL® P200 can also effectively maintain a constant relative humidity in work and storage areas, making it commonly used by meat packers, producers of sausage and processed meats, and slaughterhouses.
JEFFCOOL® P200 is not recommended for use as a direct food additive. However, the low toxicity and absence of odor and taste make them suitable for use in food processing operations where accidental contact with food products could occur. As with any fluid used in food processing, good manufacturing practices are required.
TESTING AND ANALYSIS
To ensure that JEFFCOOL® products maintain proper inhibitor levels and desired freeze protection, an annual system analysis is encouraged.
Sample kits are free of charge and available upon request for customers who have purchased JEFFCOOL®.
