JEFFCOOL® Dilutions of Coolants
JEFFCOOL® dilutions of coolants with water are necessary to obtain proper freeze protection. This should be done prior to installation. Water quality matters in any glycol-based heat transfer system. Overall performance, fluid, and system integrity are all affected by the quality of the dilution water being used
Is Water Quality Important in a Gycol-based System?
Yes, this fact is inherently true for any glycol-based system. Fluid stability and the integrity of inhibitors and your system are affected by the quality of the water used for dilution. The inhibitors will be attracted to and react to impurities in exceptionally hard water, effectively removing the corrosion protection needed within the system. Impurities can react poorly with the glycol fluids and lead to by-products and fluid degradation.
What Quality of Water Should be Used for JEFFCOOL® Dilutions?
The best way to avoid the issues caused by poor water is to start with high-quality water, free of troublesome impurities like salts and ions. Hard water contains calcium and magnesium ions, which deposit scale in the system and could also cause precipitation of a portion of the inhibitor system. When hard water conditions exist, if possible, distilled, deionized, or boiler condensate water should be used. The table below details the maximum levels of these compounds for a system to function without issues.
It is recommended to use de-ionized water for heat transfer systems to prevent these reactions. If suitable water sources are not available, pre-diluted JEFFCOOL® product formulas are available to purchase. Third Coast Chemicals offers 30% to 60% glycol for all JEFFCOOL® dilutions of concentrates.
TESTING AND ANALYSIS
To ensure that JEFFCOOL® products maintain proper inhibitor levels and desired freeze protection, annual system analysis is encouraged.
Sample kits are free of charge and available upon request for customers who have purchased JEFFCOOL®.
